Where are Their Parents?
“She came back from boarding school because of this terrible thing that happened,” says ‘Gossip Girl’ star Blake Lively who plays Serena van der Woodsen. “Last year she was looking for redemption and looking for herself. She thought she found herself, but she found a boyfriend and can sort of ignore who she really is as a person.”
‘Gossip Girl’ is the ‘90210’ of the East Coast, a group of impossibly chic socialite teenagers cope with sex and drugs. Like ‘Sex and the City’, ‘Gossip Girl’ is set in New York, is a fashion setter, and is narrated by a seemingly all-knowing character. The anonymous Gossip Girl runs a blog about her fellow Upper East Siders, creating trouble in the highly competitive circle of friends.
“There are so many romances on the brink of happening, that you think that this may happen, but then they crumble,” says Lively. “The van der Woodsens move into the Bass house, so now we’re all living together.”
“With the show everybody’s lives are interchanging,” says Lively. “Blaire, Nate, and breaking up, and now Blaire and Chuck, and then Chuck doesn’t show up for the plane. And, now Blair meets a lord who she’s spending time with. Everybody is sort of weaving out of everyone’s life.”
“I think Blair’s character is so much fun because she gets to be so evil but yet she’s so vulnerable, so you get to see where all this is coming from,” says Lively. “She becomes a bit of a New York City ‘It’ girl,” says Lively. “She strays away from her constants friends, a little bit. Becomes a bit of a hot commodity in New York. She becomes a bit of a Tinsley Mortimer type socialite.”
“She only knows only half of herself really, because she only knows herself with Dan,” says Lively. “Then all her secrets are laid out on the table. Now this is Serena starting anew, without a boyfriend, without the burden of her past on her. That’s going to be interesting to see Serena go back into partying a bit, but not getting crazy. Seeing who she is organically.”
“What draws people in is the sexiness of the show,” says Penn Badgley who plays Dan Humphrey. “It’s definitely changed our lives. We live differently now. We live in the city. We go to events and people recognize us.”
“It’s clear why there would be that obsession or fixation or interest or intrigue into the show, because it’s Gossip Girl,” says Leighton Meester who plays Blair Waldorf. “Just the name itself is asking for it. Plus we’re in New York.
“The first time we came in we had no idea what was going to happen,” says Meester. “We just knew that we loved the show and wanted to continue. The success of the show is more than we ever expected.”
“It’s a very fashiony show,” says Meester. “We have great clothes. People who watch ‘The O.C.’ love it. People who read the books love it.”
“It starts the season off with a bang,” says Chase Crawford who plays Nate Archibald. “Nate in particular, there’s a bit of a scandalous surprise relationship with an older woman. It makes for great drama.”
“And cool storylines are crazy, but they’re really dramatic and that’s we people want to see,” says Meester. “ We like to see people who are really wealthy, seemingly having the perfect life, be imperfect and not really having everything they want.”
“We’re here in the Hampton because this is our first episode of season two,” says Lively. “It’s a little bit like camp. The beach is over there…and I’m working.”
“The Hamptons are like a little getaway from New York City where the rich come and play and have big beautiful houses and pool houses and everything else,” says Meester.
“It’s fun, and we’re all out here,” says Badgley. “It’s almost like being in the pilot again because we don’ have anything to do but hang out together and go to dinner afterwards. The Hamptons, it’s a very posh scene.”
“The paparazzi have been a bit out of control,” says Lively. “It’s fine when they come to set, but when they’re stalking you outside your house that’s not fun at all. It comes with the territory. Our show is about gossip. It’s about buzz.”
‘Gossip Girl’ is based on the books by Cecily von Ziegesar. Von Ziegesar grew up in Manhattan and attended an all girl school. ‘Gossip Girl’ was her first novel.
Originally planned as a film, Warner Bros. had ‘Gilmore Girls’ creator Amy Sherman-Palladino attached to write the screenplay with Lindsay Lohan to star. When that fell through, Fox considered ‘Gossip Girl’ for a television series, again canceled. Then the CW gave the pilot a greenlight with executive producer Josh Schwartz from ‘The O.C.’
